“Beyond the Joint” Why cancer knowledge, understanding, and skill adaptation are essential to MSK Practice
At present , over 50% of the Canadian population will be affected by cancer in their lifetime and improvements in treatment and survivorship have led to increased prevalence of patients with current or past diagnosis of cancer in musculoskeletal (MSK) practice. This webinar will delve into the critical integration of cancer knowledge within musculoskeletal (MSK) practice. Attendees will gain insights into how cancer impacts the musculoskeletal system and the importance of adapting skills to manage these effects effectively. The session will emphasize the necessity for comprehensive understanding of cancer and its treatments to enhance differential diagnosis, management strategies, and patient outcomes. By the end of the webinar, participants will be better understand the importance of incorporating cancer-related knowledge into their MSK practice, ultimately improving patient care.

Mary-Ann Dalzell, MSc PT She is past Chair, Oncology Division, CPA and past chair of National Education and Clinical Mentorship for the Division. At present she is Associate Professor and senior expert in Rehabilitation Oncology, Department of Health Sciences, University of Quebec at Chicoutimi, affiliate of McGill and co-coordinating the implementation of a national competency framework for education in oncology rehabilitation. Her teaching career spans several decades as Faculty Lecturer at the School of Physical and Occupational Therapy, McGill, and includes the development of courses in orthopedics, sports medicine, biophysical modalities, and rehabilitation oncology. She is co-coordinator of the Global Course on Physiotherapy in Oncology for IPT-Hope ,the Oncology Division of the WCPT, featuring an international panel of experts in cancer rehabilitation.
